C21: Starline secures O’Shea art doc

July 2017

London-based Starline Entertainment has picked up global distribution rights to a documentary about Irish-American artist Tighe O’Donoghue/Ross.

The 70-minute film, titled Why Is There Anything Instead of Nothing, is directed and produced by Patrick O’Shea, alongside Aidan Stanley for Cork-based production company Southernman Films.

The film, the first feature doc for Southernman, was independently financed and has no broadcasters attached yet. Carey Fitzgerald from Starline negotiated the distribution deal with O’Shea.

Starline is lining up the film for the festival circuit and is also cutting a 52-minute version for television and digital platforms, to be ready in August. “We have every confidence the film will resonate internationally and we can’t wait to share it with our extensive portfolio of buyers,” said Fitzgerald.

The documentary portrays the life and work of O’Donoghue/Ross following his commercial success in the 1970s and ’80s. Born in New York, the artist has now moved with his family to his ancestral home in Ireland, withdrawing himself publicly from the art world.

The previous documentary that Starline acquired was David Soul’s Cuban Soul in May. The company also recently sold a documentary about Puccini across Europe.
