London based Starline Entertainment continues to grow its factual slate, as the company announces scooping up worldwide rights on Dave Evans’s investigative doc, My Grandfather the Spy.

Co-directed by Martin Scanlan, the film delves into closely guarded family secrets, as Dave Evans embarks on a mission to solve the mystery behind his grandfather’s frequent trips behind the Iron Curtain during the height of the Cold War; as well as uncover the identity of the glamorous, 21-year-old dissident he brought back to Dave’s unsuspecting home in Wales one Boxing Day in the late ‘70’s, having apparently spirited her out of Communist Bulgaria.

What begins as a personal attempt to find closure, not having seen or heard from his grandfather since that Christmas in 1979, soon snowballs into a real-life thriller of Le Carré proportions, as Dave stumbles into a steadily thickening plot that takes him from the quiet Welsh Valleys to a world of jewel heists, international jet set and Cold War espionage

Developed through the New Discoveries programme at The Balkan Documentary Center and awarded a special mention for best pitch at The Prizren International Documentary Festival, My Grandfather the Spy represents far more than a straightforward documentary project for Dave Evans, as the filmmaker explains, "I knew my family had a story, I just didn't realise how big a story it was!”

Starline’s Director of Acquisitions, Piers Nightingale commented, “Life – not least family life – is so often stranger than fiction, and when Dave came in to tell us his extraordinary story, we were completely transfixed,”. He added, “With his and Martin’s combined filmmaking talents evident from the footage so far, we can’t wait to bring this thrilling documentary to the international market.”

On schedule to complete in December, My Grandfather the Spy is produced through Dave Evans’s Shoot from the Hip Films, with support from Ffilm Cymru Wales, as well as BBC Wales, who intend to co-commission a TV cut of the film
